Who We Are
Friends of Tompkins Square Park is dedicated to restoring & preserving the beauty, health, and safety of Tompkins Square Park for all.
Currently, we are volunteers, without a board or staff. We collaborate together about our cleanup & planting events, share hosting duties along with administrative tasks such as writing grant proposals, creating social media posts and communicating with our community partners. Our identities reflect the creativity of the East Village; we each bring a different yet complementary skill set to our work. We are welcoming, flexible, and empathic with excellent communication skills.
What We Do
In 2024, we hosted 28 events attended by 504 volunteers who swept under benches, collected trash, weeded, amended the soil, planted & watered hundreds of new plants.
-
Planted 24 new species of native plants including one tree, twelve shrubs, over one hundred native perennials along with annuals and vines too numerous to count.
-
Planted 1375 Spring bulbs: Daffodils, Grape hyacinth and Siberian squill.
-
Sowed 750 native seeds: Goldenrod, Milkweed and Coneflower.
-
Amended the soil with 600 pounds of new soil, 120 pounds of compost and countless wheel barrows of mulch.
