Who We Are
We are holding monthly volunteer-led little cleanups to gather reusable plastic waste to use in a light installation for the Kumukutikutitap project a design/ research project that aims to explore the environmental economic, and cultural dimensions of capiz shell harvesting.
The Kumukutitap Project is a collaborative arts-based research project of the UKAI Initiative (ukai.nyc) that aims to illuminate and honor the diasporic Filipino community in Queens, New York. In using the motif of the parol, a traditional Filipino Christmas lantern, we explore the
environmental, economic, and cultural dimensions of capiz shell harvesting, often used for parols.
What We Do
To manifest this work, we aim to develop public light installations featuring parols and lanterns made from capiz shells harvested from the Philippine seas and repurposed plastic sourced from the neighborhood. The installation will serve as both an art piece and an educational campaign, merging art, culture, and ecological engagement.
